This spectacular 2 kilo silver coin struck in high relief with an antiqued finish pays homage to one of Earth’s most remarkable insects.
Bees have provided humans with honey for millennia. The ancient Egyptians attached great religious and spiritual significance to bees, while many civilisations honoured them in art, jewellery, sculpture, and like the Greeks, on early coins. English poet Geoffrey Chaucer admired their seemingly endless industry and energy, originating the phrase ‘busy as bees’. But their role as effective crop pollinators outweighs every other aspect their benevolence. Through this vital biological service, they remain essential to people and the planet.
The coin portrays three worker bees on the petals of a large flower. The background includes representations of additional honey bees and flowers. As well as a ribbon scroll with the inscription ‘HONEY BEE’, the reverse includes the coin’s weight, purity, 2024 year-date, and a ‘P125’ mintmark.
The obverse of each coin depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, and the monetary denomination.
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a translucent case which comes in a black wooden presentation box.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint’s 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
